University Istropolitana

Universitas Istropolitana (call from the XVI century incorrectly Academia Istropolitana ) in Pressburg (now Bratislava), was the second university founded in the Kingdom of Hungary, and the first to be established in what is now Slovakia. The university is no longer active, and more recently founded Comenius University in Bratislava in 1919, is considered his successor. The word Istropolitana derived from Istropolis ( "Danube City"), the ancient name for Bratislava Ancient Greek.

It was founded in 1465 by the hand of Pope Paul II, commissioned by King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary. Then was the only university in what at that time was the Kingdom of Hungary, as the first, established in Pécs by King Louis I of Hungary, in the fourteenth century, was short-lived. Many teachers of fame Austria, Italy and Poland exercised in college, including Galeotto Marzio and subsequently Hungarian Archbishop John Vitez. The university was closed in 1490 after the death of King Corvino, for lack of funds. The university building is Renaissance and today houses the University of the Performing Arts in Bratislava.
